Workshop 3: Beginning and Intermediate Bioinformatics

Format: Hybrid format. In-person (limited to 42 participants) and Virtual (via Zoom).
Where: Digital Scholarship Center, Edmon Low Library
Prerequisite: Familiarity with Linux command line. Some programming skills such as bash scripting
can be helpful (Workshops 1 and 2). Instructions might be sent a few days before the
workshop for any installations you might need.

Description:
Most life science disciplines need common Bioinformatics tools to answer different questions. To this end, this workshop is designed for students or researchers that are just starting on their career in life sciences. We are going to start with the most basic and most popular tool in Bioinformatics; BLAST (Basic Local Alignment Search Tool). We are going to briefly cover the basics of sequence alignment and delve into the command line aspects. The focus will be on creating specialized databases for your own research. We also will leverage some of the skills we learned in the Linux workshops.
Participants will need to bring their own laptop to participate in the workshop. Five (5) laptops can be provided on a first-come, first-served basis.
